Description

“Dachshund” is a German word meaning “badger dog.” And, as the name suggests these dogs were developed to dig into badger dens and dispatch its occupant. The Dachshund was bred to hunt badgers and other tunneling animals, rabbits, and foxes. Easily recognized by its long body and stubby legs, the Dachshund (commonly known as a doxie, or sausage or wiener dog) is a small hunting hound with a big personality.

With their adorable and goofy personality, the Dachshund makes an excellent family companion. They are clever, energetic, and love to play. After playtime, one of their favorite things to do is cuddle with their human.

Dachshunds come in three coat types: smooth, longhair, and wirehair, and two sizes: standard and mini. The smooth and longhaired Dachshund can be single-colored (red or cream, perhaps with some black hair), two-colored (black, chocolate, wild boar (grizzled), gray (blue) or Isabella (fawn) with tan or cream markings), or dappled (merle pattern in their coats, with light and dark colored areas in even distribution). A wirehaired Dachshund is commonly a wild boar color.
